The Impact of Flavored Nicotine

Hello, my name Is Evelyn and this is my second year in Evolvement and first on the leadership team. Nicotine is an addictive drug that over 2 million middle and high school students use nationally. Flavored products are dangerous because they specifically target the youth with candy, sweet, and yummy sounding flavors.

Recently, I participated in a partner presentation with the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center with No Minor Sale. This opportunity allowed me to educate youth and potential partners about the dangers of nicotine. I also ran and set up a table with my friend for No Menthol Sunday at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center. I advocated to stop the sale of tobacco and nicotine products to minors. Through these events I was able to work on and grow my public speaking skills.

I believe protecting the youth from flavored nicotine is important because many youth start using nicotine products due to the flavors. New Mexico should care about a flavor restriction policy to reduce the amount of teens that use nicotine. If there aren’t flavors then vapes won't appear as appealing to the youth and therefore youth won't be tempted to use these products. With No Minor Sale, we can work together to accomplish this goal.
